The entire Federal Republic of Germany is just at the boiling point. A new form of home music is coming into existence. It has nothing to do with violin playing children, scratchy sweaters and well- combed relatives listening on the sofa, but rather combines the fears and dark abyss of industrial society. Remarkably it is the same industry that made the tools available to the raging youths: cheap Casio keyboards, synthesisers, drum computers and four track tape recorders.
Felix Kubin, one half of the Hamburg based futuristic noise band Klangkrieg, recently compiled a 25 tracks material for Finders Keepers. Science Fiction Park Bundesrepublik (German Home Recording Tape Music Of The 1980s) features rare and mostly unheard tracks by bands like Plastiktanz, Neros Tanzende Elektropäpste, chbb, Holger Hiller, Eisenhauer and Pyrolator, as well as several one hit wonders by the rural tape label Pissing Cow Tapes.
“Back then I swore to myself that I would never adjust to commercial rules,” German sound futurist Felix Kubin says in linear notes of the release. “I wanted to keep my music experimental in the widest sense: exploring new fields and methods of making music all my life. I try to keep the raw energy that I know from these movements back then, even though I know that I get more and more refined through experience. But sometimes it’s good to leave all your knowledge behind, destroy the crystals and throw a bottle.”
