Asimovian ambient for robots with positronic implants of Charlie Parker’s memory. We find many types of robots in this restless forest: jazz-listening metallic parrots, confused humanoid experts in Botany, immobile cinephiles with looper devices, non-positronic story-telling computers and even a wind-powered conductor. As you may imagine, the selection of samples and field recordings for these two compositions – ‘Settlement Alpha’ / ‘Settlement Beta’ – is quite varied and rich in ideas. Non-robot listeners find it strange yet comforting.

Nigel Samways has been active since at least 2008, indulging himself in electro-acoustics and atmospheres, and also running the ephre imprint label. His approach to field recordings is very musical and playful, as can also be heard on the wonderful Havenots Havenever where he used a plethora of street recordings and played some delightfully odd music along that.

Forest of Robots – which ranks as the best ambient album I’ve listened to in the past few years – is still available on the Ginjoha label from Hokuto City, Japan. Released on C45 cassette and limited to 75 copies worldwide.
