Stavanger born, Berlin based vocalist Stine Janvin Motland works with experimental music, sound and audiovisual performance. This concert was recorded at an underground music club called "Aristīds" in Riga, Latvia,
Through a diversity of projects such as the live radio play In Labour (2014), the performative installation The Subjective Frequency Transducer (2015), field recording adaptations duo Native Instrument (2015) and alter ego Stine II, she explores and challenges the physical features of the voice, the acoustics of her external/internal surroundings and new performance strategies. Her interest in the ambiguous and unrecognisable qualities of the voice, pushes her to constantly search for new ways to expand her vocal repertoire. Her recent work significantly involves imitation and abstract storytelling through sound collages referring to a variety of genres and traditions of electronic music, sound poetry, folk music and languages of various peoples, birds and animals.
'This recording captures my first live performance of material from my new solo project Fake Synthetic Music. The project is about de-glorifying the voice as a supposedly fragile instrument and playing with the perception of the difference between fake and real. With a purist distance to the intimate and human aspects of the voice, I present a minimal and insisting imitation of synthetic sequences inspired by early electronic music and deconstructed rave. For the performance at Aristids in Riga, I was just starting to develop this material, and it was quite an improvised set. Since then it became louder, faster and more structured, but the format is pretty much the same; amplified voice and echo-effect', says Stine for The Attic.
