Acronym

UR.BASM is a new music and visual arts festival happening in Bucharest from November 30 to December 4. The event´s intention is to illustrate Bucharest's urban culture, with more focus on the electronic music scene, contemporary art, street culture, performance and contemporary dance.

During the day, the festival will map the existing infrastructure and important institutions of the independent art scene and will also create the context for emerging artists to experiment and show their work to the public, in various unconventional locations and spaces. During the night, 5 spaces dedicated to electronic music will define the festival's music program.

Romexpo, the biggest venue, will host two areas designated to all night long events, including big shots like Loco Dice, Moodyman, Cassy, Cobblestone Jazz live and more. Kristal, the oldest electronic music club in Bucharest, will keep up with it's usual direction, hosting names like Ben Klock, Gaizer live, Hartthrob live and others. GuestHouse, the minimal techno church, will go on with what it does best, showcasing the Romanian local heroes Raresh, Petre Inspirescu, Barac, Priku, Herodot, among usual guests from other parts of the world like Ion Ludwig, Dasha Redkina, Francesco del Guarda and others, but with a surprisingly twist featuring Phuong Dan and Orgue Eletronique live.

Meanwhile, our partner-in-crime newly opened venue KRAN will host 4 long and intense nights of pure underground electronics featuring both local emerging artists, as well as first-time-in-Bucharest international guests. Check out these 8 artists that you are not allowed to miss:

Acronym first surfaced in late 2012 on his own imprint, Dimensional Exploration, putting out mind-bending music and working in the sphere of similar peers like Abdulla Rashim. A few months later he published a 12″ on Rashim’s newly found label and platform, Northern Electronics.

Acronym has now shown himself to be a prolific producer of deep, percussive techno by continuously releasing EP's and remixes.

Borusiade

Born and raised in Bucharest, Romania, and now residing in Berlin, Borusiade, real name Miruna Boruzescu, started dj-ing in 2002 as one of the only female DJs in the city’s emerging alternative clubbing scene.

Influenced by a classical musical education and fascinated by raw electronic sounds, Borusiade combined these elements in the construction of her DJ sets and, starting 2005, also in her music production. As she managed to build a sound of her own, often dark, with poignant bass lines, obsessive themes and by all means melodic, starting 2015, she was signed on Cómeme agency and label.

Her DJ sets combine bold and obscure sounds and genres fluctuating mostly in the field of Dark Disco, Minimal Wave, raw House with an Acid touch. The sound is gloomy and powerful, with beats that touch one’s deepest senses on the dance floor.

Inga Mauer

Inga Mauer is the new kid on your block. Coming from St. Petersburg, Russia where she is a resident DJ in the famous club (Stackenschneider) she is now gaining attention in Europe. The music she serves up comes from a place of love and knowledge in equal measures – no cheap thrills, just pure musical joy.

Growing up in a remote village in the heart of Russia, Inga listened intensely to early Bunker Records, Cybernetic Broadcasting System (now Intergalactic FM), Trax, and UR recordings which have set the scene for her seductive sound: a mix of blistering atmospheres and dark emotions, flirting with a wide range of genres like Industrial Techno, EBM, and New Wave. This young talent is gaining a fast-growing reputation from Den Haag to Berlin, from Cologne to Tel Aviv, and completing a circle of influence as a desired guest on Intergalactic.fm. Not only a great DJ, Inga is also a truly restless producer, constantly recording lunatic jams and wild rhythms in a world of no musical compromises. Expect great things to come this year when she starts releasing and opens your ears. Currently under the wing of the Bunker Records team.

Fred P

Anyone who followed the development of house music made in the USA in the last decade will certainly have met the art of Fred Peterkin aka Fred P aka Black Jazz Consortium.

Since a while the New York city native that is working on his very own music for almost 20 years is on everyone's lips, as he is releasing some of the gentlest soul infiltrated four-to-the-floor house creations you can get. His musical set phrase isn't new or special, as he is often simply melting shuffling percussion with elementary melodies. But he does it in a sense that the heavy used and abused phrase "deepness" finally gets a fresh truthfully new meaning.

As a man who danced in his younger years in legendary NYC clubs like the Red Zone, Sound Factory or Tunnel to dj sets of larger-than-life selectors like Frankie Knuckles or Danny Tenaglia, he learned that sometimes less is more. and that he should rather listen to his heart and soul, then to the susurrus of the music market.

Nick Hoppner

Currently residing in his home of choice and calling, Berlin, Nick Hoppner skillfully balances, explores and contributes to a dramatically wide range of musical professions, proving him to be one of the backbones of today's house and techno underground.

Be it through his monthly residencies at the inimitable Berghain/Panoramabar, his solo releases for Ostgut Ton, his expansive DJ touring, or indeed his creative involvement and management of the Ostgut label since its inception, Nick stands out as a unique, long-serving and truly dedicated figure in today's electronic music world.

As a producer and DJ, Höppner displays all the characteristics of a life-long music lover. Sensitive to the history, emotions, stories and situations that derive from this music, for Nick the scope and eclecticism available within the 4/4 rhythm allows him great freedom to express his tastes and musical instincts. Throughout his five solo 12''s on Ostgut Ton, we find lush, uplifting house, deeply melodic techno dub sessions, spooky percussive workouts, and lashings of richly produced musical statements, always ably avoiding musical pigeonholes As a remixer too, Nick's passion for storytelling comes through with great enthusiasm, as his interpretations of Asusu on Livity Sound, Dauwd on Pictures Music or Airhead on Brainmath have all shown.

October

Bristol based Dutch man, October makes music and plays vinyl. October, on his real name Julian Raymond Smith, is a shining example of a renegade artist, constantly forging his own path rather than following the pack. Based in the musical melting pot of Bristol, he has been steadily rising in profile and creativity, both as a producer and as a DJ, since his first label Caravan Recordings came into being back in 2007. In that short time his brand of off-kilter house and techno has also appeared on, Perspectiv, Misericord, Jack Off and Immerse, championed by the likes of Ewan Pearson, Ripperton and DJ Qu while also collaborating with peers such as Appleblim, Will Saul, Kowton and many more.

When he steps into the club, the same unconventional approach can be expected behind the decks as his deadly record collection gets a rough workout. At his prime in the sweaty, feverish peak of the night but equally adaptable to more hushed tones in the warm-up slot, October is a DJ in the truest sense of the word; sensitive to the crowd he plays to, uncompromising in his artistic vision, and playing vinyl only.

Signed to Skudge Recordings and Simple Records, DJ October has also been the driving force behind his new label ‘TANSTAAFL’ Records, which has been widely praised by the music press, and sets the course for more of the jacking dancefloor house and techno he is known for.

*Thursday, December 1st, at KRAN.

SNTS

An anonymous producer with a gritty, heads-down style of techno and a focus on vinyl, SNTS first surfaced in late 2012.

He's been behind two record trilogies, Chapters and Scenes, issued through his self-titled label, and also earned appearances on Horizontal Ground and Edit Select Records.

*Friday, December 2nd, at KRAN.
