Another piece is added to the mosaic of Turkish sounds by the Finders Keepers crew through the release of Gökcen Kaynatan’s early works.

Raised and thriving among the rock’n’roll influences of the late 50s and 60s, Kaynatan was a key behind the Turkish electronic music of the 20th century. After working with musicians such as Cem Karaca and Ozdemir Erdogan and after having played with numerous rock’n’roll bands, he shifted towards composing alone, making use of the guitar and self-customed analog synths.

The pieces brought together in the album have these two central components, building a psychedelic realm over the rock’n’roll foundations of his influences, along with the Anatolian radiance surging at a cellular level.

The sinuous trajectories that cultures have over one another in music make the cultural appropriation stamp difficult to place outside a political specter. After paving the way for such findings with Mustafa Ozkent’s Gençlik ile elele, an album that would have otherwise been lost forever, the Finders Keepers team placing another Turkish pioneer in electronic music in the spotlight comes as no surprise, it does not feed a nostalgia but rather adds another layer in how we perceive music and its historical unfolding.
